is also called a MT in short. The hierarchy in Medical Transcription Industry
varies from company to company. Usually it starts from OJT (on the job trainee)
who is paid stipend, then Junior MT, Senior MT, Executive MT, etc.
Sometimes people assume transcriptionist's job is just mechanical typing
work, but in reality a Medical Transcriptionist requires plenty of
Medical knowledge. He will need to refer a lot of medical books or electronic
dictionaries like the Stedman's, Quick look, English Dictionaries, and all
possible medical reference books. He will need to use his listening skills. He
will need to use his intelligence in determining what doctor means as the
doctors will not be available to clarify the medical terminology he used. Hence
medical transcriptionists are sometimes called as Medical Language Specialists
just to point out that it is not a simple job that any Tom, Dick, and Harry can
do.
After a junior MT finishes typing it goes through editing by another experienced
person called as the Editor. The Editor's job is to make correction on what his
junior has done. It should not be forgotten that a medical transcription work
involves simultaneous use of eyes for reading, ears for listening, fingers for
typing, legs for foot pedal to control the voice player software of the
computer.
Internet search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN have
really made transcription much easier by helping the MTs find the right
word by searching through various medical sites on the internet. Also, search on
a wrong spelling on these search engines leads to suggestion of the actual
spelling based on the importance of the actual word.
After Editing work is finished, it goes to the Quality Analyst(QA)/Quality
Controller (QC), who will fill in the blanks or words which could not be filled
by the Editor. The Quality Analyst(QA)/Quality Controller (QC) will be usually
be a doctor who will use his medical knowledge and skills to fill the blanks.
Finally, a Proofer or Proof Reader goes through the whole document checking for
its grammatical errors or sentence restructuring before finally it reaching the
dictating doctor's table as a perfect record. All the while it is the Production
Manager who keep the tab of the job work flow be it a 24-hour TAT (Turn around
time) or be it a 12-hour TAT or be it a STAT job. Various companies cut short
the number of levels to suit their needs and as per client requirements.

$16. In India, Medical Transcription Job is done at a price ranging from as low
as 1 cent to 12 cents per line (65 characters). The low price resulted as some
new companies tried to undercut the older ones in the pricing.
The boom in Home Transcription in India has helped many Indian Medical
Transcription Companies to lower the cost of transcription since they save on
overheads. However, there is some worry as to the level of HIPAA compliance and
security that can be got on a home transcription platform. Regardless of that
more and more MTs are opting to work from home, especially housewives and
retired people doing part time jobs.
